Leading brand of electrostatic precipitator for commercial kitchen ventilation.

Why is smoke still coming out after installing an ESP?

Many restaurant and kitchen operators encounter a confusing problem: even after installing an Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP), visible smoke still discharges from the exhaust vent. This does not always mean the equipment is faulty. In most cases, it stems from mismatched configuration, improper operation, or neglected maintenance.

The first and most common reason is airflow mismatch. If the kitchen exhaust fans airflow far exceeds the ESPs processing capacity, the equipment cannot capture oil mist and smoke particles in time. Excessive wind speed blows pollutants directly through the electric field, resulting in obvious smoke discharge. Conversely, unreasonably low fan speed causes poor ventilation, leading to accumulated smoke overflow indoors.

Dirty and failed internal components are another major cause. The core collector cell of the ESP accumulates thick grease after long-term operation. Without regular cleaning, the electric field weakens or fails completely, losing the ability to adsorb smoke and oil particles. Many users only clean the equipment after visible smoke appears, which leads to long-term ineffective purification.

In addition, single-stage ESP purification limitations cannot be ignored. Standard ESPs excel at removing large oil mist and particulate smoke, but they cannot filter tiny gaseous smoke molecules and cooking fume odor. For heavy cooking scenarios such as barbecue, stir-fry and spicy hot pot, fine smoke may still escape without an additional activated carbon filter.

Wrong installation and power issues also contribute to the problem. Unsealed duct connections cause smoke leakage, while unstable power supply leads to insufficient high-voltage electric field output and reduced purification efficiency.

To eliminate smoke discharge, users need to match the correct ESP airflow, adhere to regular cell cleaning, ensure sealed installation and stable power supply. For heavy-smoke kitchens, an ESP combined with an activated carbon filter is the most reliable solution to achieve zero-smoke and odor-free exhaust.
