How do I calculate the required CMH air flow for a CNC machine oil mist collector?

The required CMH (m³/h) airflow for a CNC machine oil mist collector is most commonly calculated from the internal enclosure volume and a target air-change rate. This ensures slight negative pressure so mist is drawn into the collector instead of leaking out.Primary Method: Enclosure Volume × Air Changes
  1. Measure the internal working volume of the machine enclosure (Length × Width × Height in metres).
    Subtract the approximate volume occupied by major internal components (table, spindle, fixtures, etc.) if significant (often 10–20%).
  2. Select the air-change rate (number of complete air exchanges per minute):
    • Light mist / low-pressure coolant / long cycles: 4–5
    • Typical flood coolant / moderate mist: 5–6 (most common manufacturer recommendation)
    • High-pressure coolant (through-spindle), heavy mist, short cycles, or visible smoke: 8–10
      (Some sources use 15–30 air changes per hour instead; convert by dividing by 60.)
  3. Calculate airflow:
    CMH=V×N×60\text{CMH} = V \times N \times 60\text{CMH} = V \times N \times 60

    where
    • ( V ) = enclosure volume in m³
    • ( N ) = air changes per minute
    Example (Filtermist-style calculation):
    Enclosure 2.5 m × 1.5 m × 1.75 m ≈ 6.56 m³, minus 20% internals → ≈ 5.25 m³.
    At 6 air changes/min:
    5.25×6×60=1 8905.25 \times 6 \times 60 = 1\,8905.25 \times 6 \times 60 = 1\,890
    CMH.Equivalent Chinese manufacturer rule of thumb often used:
    Q (m³/min)=V×αQ\ (\text{m³/min}) = V \times \alphaQ\ (\text{m³/min}) = V \times \alpha
    (where
    α=5\alpha = 5\alpha = 5
    –10), then multiply by 60 for CMH.
    Or simply
    V×360V \times 360V \times 360
    for a 6-changes/min baseline.
  4. Add safety margin: Increase the calculated value by 20–50% (or more) to account for:
    • Filter loading / pressure drop over time
    • Duct losses (elbows, flexible hose, length)
    • Future process changes (higher coolant pressure, etc.)
Alternative Method: Opening / Capture Velocity (for less-sealed or open machines)If the enclosure has significant permanent openings (chip conveyor, gaps, doors frequently open):
CMH=A×v×3600\text{CMH} = A \times v \times 3600

where
  • ( A ) = total open area in m²
  • ( v ) = capture/face velocity (typically 0.5–1.0 m/s for enclosed machines; higher for open stations).
Add the volume-based requirement for any remaining sealed volume if needed.
