Leading brand of electrostatic precipitator for commercial kitchen ventilation.

Does an auto-wash ecology unit comply with NFPA 96 grease duct standards?

NFPA 96 sets fire safety rules for commercial kitchen exhaust systems to control grease fire risks. An auto-wash ESP ecology unit can align with NFPA 96 requirements, but compliance depends on unit design, installation configuration and local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) approval.

First, a critical distinction: NFPA 96 defines strict construction standards for continuous grease ducts that transport grease-laden vapors. The auto-wash ESP ecology unit is classified as an in-line grease removal air cleaning device, not a grease duct itself. When installed downstream of a properly constructed NFPA 96-compliant grease duct, the unit functions as a supplementary grease interceptor.

The automatic washing mechanism delivers a key compliance advantage. Regular automated hot water and surfactant cleaning continuously removes accumulated grease on electrostatic plates and pre-filters, limiting combustible grease buildup inside the unit. This reduces fire hazards and extends professional duct cleaning cycles, consistent with NFPA 96’s core objective of controlling grease deposits.

However, several mandatory conditions must be satisfied. The unit housing must use non-combustible materials such as stainless steel. Access panels must be provided for full internal inspection. In many jurisdictions, the unit requires integrated fire suppression protection inside the equipment chamber. Additionally, downstream ductwork still needs periodic professional inspection, as the ESP cannot fully eliminate all fine grease particles.

It is important to clarify that automatic cleaning does not fully replace scheduled professional inspections required by NFPA 96. Operators must still follow inspection protocols and keep maintenance records. Local fire officials hold final judgement on acceptance, and some regions require third-party equipment listing.

In summary, a properly engineered auto-wash ecology unit meets NFPA 96 safety principles when paired with compliant upstream grease ductwork, adequate fire protection and ongoing inspection routines. Pre-installation consultation with the local fire authority is always recommended to confirm full site acceptance.
